Camp Boggy Creek
Project Description
- The Camp Boggy Creek Gang in Florida offers MS-I and MS-II students an opportunity to engage in medical service-learning activities at a domestic site during their summer vacation.
- This is a camp designed for children with critical and/or chronic illnesses such as cancer, hemophilia, paralysis, ventilator-dependence, etc.
- Students interact with families in a camp setting where the focus on medical illness is minimized and emphasis is placed on allowing children to "just be kids at camp."
- In this setting, students provide a volunteer service to the camp and families while learning the impact of illness on children and their families in a non-medical setting.
- The experience provides insight into the many hardships sick children and their families face.
- All first- and second-year medical students are welcome to apply. Up to seven students can participate in a trip.
- This year, the trip will be scheduled during the summer of 2009.
- The selected students will participate in orientation sessions prior to the trip.
- Participating students will be responsible for the airfare expense (approximately $200-300). All other camp expenses (food and lodging) are supported by Camp Boggy Creek.
