Competency 6: Social and Community Contexts of Health Care
Level 3 Passport
Part A: Students must choose from the following options for achieving Level 3 credit in Competency VI: Social and Community Contexts of Health Care:
Option 1*: Electives that offer Level 3 credit
- History of Medicine
- Leadership in Medicine
- Holistic Healthcare in an Inner-City Family Medicine Elective
- Health Care in a Third World Country
- Enhancing Health Care to Diverse Communities
Option 2: Community Engagements that offer Automatic Level 3 credit so long as the community engagement activity 1) meets a Competency 6 theme and 2) is accompanied by a reflection essay
- Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs (OMCA) – leadership roles for OMCA supported projects such as Diversity Week and Faces of Faith
- You may contact Krystal Ardayfio for other opportunities
- Office of Medical Service Learning (OMSL) –
- Co-chair roles for OMSL supported projects
- Students who complete the Community Leadership Mentor Program
- You may contact Steve Kirchhoff for other opportunities.
- Student Interest Groups (SIG) – co-chairs of SIGs that have several Social and Community Concepts of Health Care related medical community service projects
- You may contact Deanna Willis to discuss whether or not your SIG activities meet this requirement
- Students Making Improvements in the Lives of Elders (SMILE) – students who complete all SMILE requirements during FM clerkship
- Please contact Glenda Westmoreland to enroll in this option
- Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS)
- students who are inducted into the GHHS are eligible for this option
Option 3: Community Engagements that offer Level 3 Credit with preapproval from Competency Director and Reflection Piece
Examples include:
- Non-elective international enrichment programs
- IUPUI Community Service Learning projects in which student has a leadership role in a medical community service project
- Health Center – student has leadership role
Option 4: Independent Project
- Misc. Independent projects, activities or membership with prior approval such as Diversity Council Membership, etc.
- Independent projects - A special competency project may be designed and completed within an existing elective or outside of the medical school curriculum. Please register your independent project via ECMS for appropriate preapproval by the Competency Director.
Part B: Write a reflection of how the option you chose above has impacted your ability to analyze a local or national health care issue to advocating for practices and policies that improve the health of individual patients and populations. For additional help in creating your reflective piece please review A Student Guide to Level 3 Reflection.
*For Option 1 Electives that require essay and/or reflection, you may use that essay and/or reflection to meet Part B of this passport.
Please proceed through ECMS to successfully complete a level 3 in Competency 6: Social and Community Context of Health Care.
